Calotes cristatellus is an agamid belonging to the group of reptiles that can change its color to blend with its surroundings. It usually displays itself in combinations of yellow and green with light-blue-green transverse bands running around its body. It has round, innocent-looking eyes set dorsally posterior to its mouth. It has a nuchal crest tapering towards its back. The color of the dorsal is darker than the ventral side of the body. Hanging on its throat is a bluish-green epidermal skin that moves while the lizard takes its rest.
Escape Behavior
As lizards do, they suddenly dart and stop along the way finding the best place to hide themselves. Some say they do this to make an illusion that it disappeared. A study of a reptile species revealed that they need to stop to reduce the level of lactic acid formed which easily builds up during sudden bursts of speed.
Habitat
In disturbed habitats Calotes make its way to home gardens and get caught in the process. Normally, they are seen climbing the trunks of trees, coconuts and among the shrubs.
Food
Calotes feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
Ecological Status
This agamid lizard is common throughout the Philippines.
